A few weeks ago, I headed down to Indio for my sixth Coachella. It’s one of my favorite music festivals, and is sort of like spring break for adults.
It was a great weekend full of good times with friends and tons of good music. We spent days lazing around the pool and danced away the nights under the desert sky.
The Weekend
My group of friends and I always go weekend 2 and rent a house near the festival grounds. The best part of having a house is being able to lounge around in the pool during the day before going to the festival. I love that giant pink flamingo floaty!
The Festival
This year the festival has expanded both in area and population. 40 acres were added to the festival grounds making it huge! With all that extra space they added another stage. They also increase the number of tickets sold by 26,000, making the total number of attendees somewhere around 125,000 people. As compared to other years, with the huge expansion in space, more people didn’t seem to make a huge impact, I felt like the crowdedness was the same it’s been in previous years. Which isn’t to say that it’s not crowded, because it definitely is, but there is always open space to go catch a breather and sit down when you want to.
The Music
By far the best set of the weekend was Justice on Sunday night. They came on just after dark with a spectacular light show and tons of dance music. I feel like Justice is the type of artist that after listening to a few of their songs you’ll be like, “oh I know all of these!” It was a great way to close out the weekend.
Other sets that were awesome were The XX, Future Islands, Galantis, Phantogram and Lady Gaga.
The Art
I really loved the art this year, I don’t know, but I feel like it was both bigger and there was more of it than in past years. The giant Pinata looking animals were pretty awesome and made for a good meeting place. I really liked the Dr. Seuss-esque trees? Pillars? I don’t know, but they were cool looking.
