“…began the part of my life you could call my life on the road. Before I’d often dreamed about going West to see the country, always vaguely planning and never taking off.”
It all started as a vacation to Thailand.
In late 2015 my boyfriend Rob and I found ourselves itching to travel, he was feeling antsy, and so was I after realizing I’d been living in the same city (San Francisco) for the last 10 years.
Asia was the next continent on my list to travel and I’d only heard great things about Thailand, so we decided that it would be our next big vacation.
Then a series of things happened. One of my best friends and her husband moved to the east coast, my parents wanted to take a family vacation to Ireland and they’d like my brother and I and our respective partners to come too, at least for part of the trip. Then since I’d be in the area anyways I figured I should go visit an old high school friend in London. And from there our simple Thailand vacation began to snowball into something much bigger.
With all the extra countries we were adding onto this trip I wasn’t going to have enough vacation time to take that much time off so like any semi irrational millennial I decided I’d just quit my job giving us an indefinite travel timeline. (Rob’s one of those freelancers, independent contractor types, so he can basically work from anywhere there’s Internet).
In the meantime though, before we take off on that grand adventure in June, we’ll be taking all kinds of weekend trips and excursions, I don’t think I’ve spent a weekend at home in the last month! So I’ll be bringing those adventures to you here too.
So that’s what this blog is going to be, a chronicle of my travels this year (the good, the bad, and the inevitably weird), as well as my practical and hopefully useful advice from what I learn on the road.
