Street Art Of Berlin

Berlin has some of the best street art in the world. Officially dubbed the “City of Design” there is no shortage on the artsy vibes around this city, almost everywhere you look you’ll see a stencil on the sidewalk or a paper cut out plastered to a wall.

Berlin has had a long history of public art and graffiti starting back in the 70’s when the Berlin Wall went from fencing and barbed wire to a full concrete wall. Making it a perfect canvas for artists in West Berlin to express their beliefs and feelings of the time. And when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 all those artists came marching on in to East Berlin with their paints and turned those neighborhoods into what are now Berlins most colorful art districts.

So you want to go see some art now huh? You can literally just wander around the city and you’ll see art everywhere, but here are a few of my favorite places.

Eastside Gallery

I think the best places to start is the Eastside Gallery. It is the longest/largest open air gallery in the world, and like the name suggests, all the art is on the east side of what remains of the Berlin Wall. There are amazing and quite famous works of art all along it.

Off to Europe this summer? Heres what to pack!

Urban Spree and the area around it

Urban Spree is an artist space and gallery in the Friedrichshain (one of those East Berlin neighborhood that was taken over by artists). The area around looks like a dilapidated warehouse district until you look a little closer and realize the old buildings are covered in art and new businesses have moved into them (clubs, bars, all the fun stuff). I could wander around this area for hours, it’s beautiful in a gritty, punk sorta way, and I love it.

Kreuzberg

The Kreuzberg neighborhood is one of the “hipster” type neighborhood so it attracts a lot of artists. Some of the most famous works are here like the Astronaut, it’s one of my favorites, and of course I didn’t get a picture of it this trip (sad face). But just walk around the neighborhood and you see all kinds of fun stuff!

Tours

If you’re not into aimlessly wandering or you are pressed for time, there are street art tours you can take. I did one almost 10 years ago when I first visited Berlin and it was pretty rad. Alternative Berlin Tours has some pretty cool tours of off the beaten path sorts of things. And Free Tours By Foot has a pretty comprehensive walking tour of Berlin’s street art as well.
