Cats of Greece

P38-featureimage

So while we were in Greece, I couldn’t help but notice all the cats. They were everywhere! ย In Athens at the Acropolis, wandering around the waterfront in Milos, and laying in the sun in Santorini. The cats of Greece really have got it made.

Being a cat lover I probably spent as much time photographing cats as I did beautiful landscapes and historic relics. So here are a few of those felines that seemed happy to pose for me.

We asked a local about the cats, and we were told that they aren’t seen as pets, they are just feral. But they aren’t considered pests either, they just seem to live a peaceful existence alongside people, in neighborhoods, and on monuments, and pretty much where ever they want. These cat literally just chill. The Greeks also don’t believe in spay/neutering them, feeling that it is inhumane. So that accounts for the vast numbers of them.

Well I hope you’ve enjoyed this little cat break, I certainly thought they we cute!

Loved the cat break! I did see a lot of cats during my three months working time in Halkidiki, Kalithea in Greece. Some looked in pretty shabby conditions and all I wanted to do was just help them somehow. In addition to cats, there was a fair few stray dogs too. I wonder if they aren’t considered as pets too? This is just puzzling. Thanks for linking up with “Flyawayfriday

Glad you liked the cat break! Yeah I saw some pretty shabby looking cats too, I always want to throw little bits of food for them.

It’s interesting that Greece doesn’t spay or neuter cats, they prefer to let them be feral. It reminds me of dogs in Peru, they roam the streets freely and no one interrupts with their daily wanderings. I enjoyed all of your photos that found these kitties throughout the city!

That interesting that theres a similar thing with dogs in Peru, its kind of cool to have a culture where you just exist with the animals around you.

How creative is this post! I love it! I’m deathly allergic to cats so I’m not about to go looking for them but the photos are super adorable! Thanks for sharing and joining Fly Away Friday! xo

I found them to be super happy and well fed (haha some fat :)) and I mean, how could they not be happy living in Greece!? Love the post and can’t wait to see what you share on Week 7 #FlyAwayFriday post!
